Thiruvananthapuram: The interventions of the ‘good people’ in the State has helped in downplaying sensitive issues and in preventing them from turning into law and order situations as in the northern States, Chief Justice of India K.G. Balakrishnan has said.

He was speaking on Saturday after presenting the 11th Benedict Mar Gregorios Award, instituted by the Association of Mar Ivanios College Old Students (AMICOS) to noted poet Sugathakumari at a function at the Co-Bank Auditorium here on Saturday.

Things would have been different in Kerala if the ‘good people’ had not effectively intervened to downplay the issues. The ill-feeling among communities one sees in the north is not seen in the State, Mr. Balakrishnan said.

The Chief Justice said development should be sustainable.

Earth is not for the present generation alone. Resources such as petrol, diesel and gas should not be exhausted by us, he added.

Lauding the efforts of Ms. Sugathakumari in protecting the environment, the Chief Justice said she was a true environmentalist. Through her literary works and acts, she reminded us of the need to protect the environment for posterity, he said.

The award

The award carries a purse of Rs.50,000, a statuette and a citation. Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs M. Vijayakumar presented the citation to Ms. Sugathakumari.

Major Archbishop and Catholicos of Malankara Syrian Catholic Church Moran Mor Baselios Cleemis presided over the function. AMICOS president Palode Ravi welcomed the gathering.

Justice J.B. Koshy and Justice K. Padmanabhan Nair of the Kerala High Court; District Judge Ramakrishnan; Mar Ivanios College Principal Fr. M.G. Mathew; former Chief Secretary C.P. Nair; AMICOS secretary K.T. Cherian Panicker and treasurer E.M. Najeeb were among those present on the occasion.
