BANGALORE: The Federation of Karnataka State Lorry Owners’ and Agents’ Association has threatened to go on strike if the rule for implementing speed governors for commercial vehicles is not scrapped. All commercial vehicles registered in the State have to install speed governors by January 1. These devices are meant to regulate and monitor the speed of vehicles. Urging Governor Rameshwar Thakur to initiate action to prevent this move, the federation in a press release issued here on Saturday said, “Truckers of Karnataka may have to go on protest and restrict trucks from other States moving without speed governors.” Karnataka would suffer losses to the tune of Rs. 2 crore as vehicles might register outside the State to bypass the rule of having speed governors, the federation said. ‘Exempt tourist taxis’The Bangalore Tourist Taxi Owners’ Association has appealed to Mr. Thakur to take steps to exclude tourist taxis from installing speed governors. In a press release issued here, the association said that instead of speed governors, the Government should improve patrolling and install monitoring cameras at various points to regulate the speed of vehicles. “In the long run, vehicle manufacturers could be asked to design vehicles, including speed governors, in the original equipment itself,” the release said.
