‘BJP will secure majority’

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: Former minister and Bharatiya Janata Party leader R. Ashok on Sunday alleged that the Janata Dal (Secular), which failed to honour the power-sharing agreement with the BJP, was responsible for the mid-term elections to the State Legislative Assembly.

He was addressing a party function organised to admit the Congress and the JD (S) workers into the party at Kaggalipura on Kanakapura Road here. Mr. Ashok said the Congress and the JD (S) have been opposing early elections to the Assembly fearing defeat. The BJP would secure a majority of seats in the next elections and form the Government on its own, he said

The JD (S), initially, formed the government with the Congress, and then dumped it to team up with the BJP after a power-sharing pact. But when it was time to hand over power to the BJP, the JD (S) backtracked. After negotiations, the two parties agreed to form the government but the JD (S) again withdrew support at the last minute when the BJP did not agree to its “conditions”, Mr. Ashok said.

‘People’s Budget’

Former Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa had presented a “peoples’ Budget” and announced several schemes for the welfare of farmers and the poor people. The electorate would not forget the “anti-people” policies pursued by the previous Congress governments, he claimed.
