Annamacharya fest next year

Special Correspondent

A calendar fest before the end of the 600th jayanti (started on May 3, 2007)

HYDERABAD: Executive Officer of the Tirumala-Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) K.V. Ramana has expressed confidence that before the end of the 600th jayanti (that started on May 3, 2007), Tallapaka, in Kadapa district, would have a calendar festival in honour of saint-composer Annamacharya.

At a press conference here on Sunday, Mr. Ramana and Director of Culture R. Kavita Prasad said already six acres had been acquired for the purpose. The cultural complex would be expanded and before May 19 next year the first of the festivals would be held. The objective was to make it a calendar event on the lines of the one that took place every year in Tiruvayyaru in Tanjore district in memory of Saint Thyagaraja.

They said programmes to popularise 32,000 songs composed by Annamacharya to express his devotion to Lord Venkateswara would be organised during the jayanti. The TTD, Department of Culture and host cultural organisations would share the expenses to conduct a series of ‘Annamayya ganamrutham’ programmes.

The first of ‘ganamrutham’ for 25 days would be conducted at Tiru Nilayam in Balaji Bhavan at Liberty here. There would be rendition of Annamayya keertanas by Sobha Raju and a vocal recital by Garimella Balakrishna Prasad and party, said K.K. Raja of Chaitanya Art Theatres, the host organisation for the event.
