Sabarimala: The Ayyappa temple at Sabarimala was opened on Sunday afternoon for the annual ‘Makaravilakku’ festival that begins on Monday. Melsanthi T.K. Krishnan Namboodiri opened the sanctum sanctorum at 5.30 p.m. in an atmosphere charged with devotion. The melsanthi lit the fireplace in front of the ‘pathinettam padi’ at the lower ‘thirumuttom’ with the sacred fire brought from the sanctum sanctorum. The rituals will begin with the ‘Ganapathy Homam’ by Tantri Kandararu Maheshararu at 4.15 a.m. on Monday. The annual ‘pettathullal’ at Erumeli will be held on January 11 and the procession carrying ‘thiruvabharanam’ will set off to Sabarimala from Valiya Koikkal Sastha Temple at Pandalam at 1.15 p.m. on January 12. The customary Pampasadya and Pampavilakku on the banks of the Pampa will be held on January 13. The Makaravilakku day is on January 14. The ‘kalabhabhishekom’ will be performed at the temple on January 18 and the ‘guruti’ ritual on January 19 evening. The temple will be closed after the customary darsan by the representative of the Pandalam palace at 7 a.m. on January 20.
