Women boxers hog the limelight

First All-India Kalinga Cup boxing championship concludes


BERHAMPUR: Two women boxers of Orissa won gold medals at the first All India Kalinga Cup boxing championship that concluded at Khallikote Autonomous College stadium on Sunday. The three-day championship was organised by the Ganjam District Amateur Boxing Association (GDABA).

Manorama Maharana of Berhampur defeated A. Fatima of West Bengal to win gold medal in the 48 kg category. In the 46 kg event, Kalavati Tanti of Rourkela Steel Plant defeated V. Achibeni of Andhra Pradesh to win the gold.

In the lightweight category, Premanand Manna of the Sikh Regiment of the Indian Army won the gold defeating Irfan Ali of West Bengal.

Jolly Oruku and Kamal Kumar of Andhra Sport Institute won the championship in the 51 kg and 57 kg categories. Their compatriot, A. Rajesh won the gold in the middle weight category. In the welter weight category T. Surya Prakash of SAI hostel of Andhra was the winner.

Some 150 men and women boxers from Army Sport Institute, Pune, Sikh Regiment Center, Ramgarh, Jharakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Sikkim, Chatisgarh, Assam, Punjab, Haryana and Orissa had participated in this championship.

Union Minister of State for Rural Development Chandrasekhar Sahu was the chief guest at the concluding function. Apart from awarding medas to the winners he also honoured some famous international boxers who included three youngsters S. Santosh Singh, Rakesh Karleskar and Parvinder Singh. Arjun Award winner senior boxer S. Jayaram, who played a major role in organising the tournament, was also honoured.
