‘Majority of households yet to open bank account’
Staff Reporter
NAMAKKAL: Over 20,000 persons opened bank accounts under the Total Financial Inclusion programme in the last three months in the district, Collector G. Sundaramurthi has said. A majority of the households in the district are yet to open a bank account. Steps have been initiated to cover all the households under the programme within January 2008, he told reporters here on Friday.
The Collector said the district administration submitted proposals to oil companies to start an agency through the cooperative department to distribute Liquefied Petroleum Gas to the consumers. Following complaints, the administration stepped up the vigil to prevent the smuggling of sand and minerals. Efforts were also taken up to prevent the smuggling of goods meant for distribution under Public Distribution System, he said.
He said that the district suffered flood-related damages to the tune of Rs. 16.69 crore.
