Move to revive reading habit among youth

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The launch of 25 books in Tamil on alternative education on Sunday marked the commencement of first-ever symposium on “New Year Celebrations with Books 2008” organised by the Students Federation of India (SFI).

These books are written by eminent personalities, poets and social reformers, including Mahatma Gandhi, Rabindranath Tagore, Subramanya Bharati, Swami Vivekananda, Lenin, B.R. Ambedkar and E.V. Ramasamy, on several topics (today’s education – challenges and solution, how children learn, thoughts on education, Montessori thoughts, primary and secondary education in Tamil Nadu, short stories and stories through art among others).

SFI State secretary G. Selva said the symposium was meant to create awareness among the decision makers that the young generation was capable of taking the country forward, if given responsibility and they are not here merely to raise slogans or to cause trouble.

“People have been welcoming New Year in different ways. However, we are trying to bring back the reading habit among the students. This novel idea has been appreciated by all. Enthused by the response, we will make it an annual affair. To make the books affordable to everyone, we will sell it at cost price,” he added.

The first symposium that was attended by over 800 people included students from Standard IX to graduates of government institutions, research scholars, lecturers and writers. Film director Balu Mahendra inaugurated the education-based film screening session.
