TV scheme allegations baseless: Karunanidhi

Special Correspondent

“Unutilised money safe in Government’s account”

CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Sunday described the charges on the free colour TV distribution made by the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Jayalalithaa as “baseless.”

In a statement, Mr. Karunanidhi explained that there was nothing contradictory on the part of the Government to have initially said that the TV sets would be given free to those households which did not have one and then extending it to every household. “Only if the Tamil Nadu Government stopped abruptly the free distribution of TV sets, would Ms. Jayalalithaa’s charge become true,” Mr. Karunanidhi said.

Referring to her allegation of diversion of balance money earmarked for one particular scheme to another, Mr. Karunanidhi said the unutilised money of a scheme would remain in that particular account and would not disappear anywhere.

Audit scrutiny

He reminded her that every rupee spent by the State exchequer would come under audit scrutiny.

“And if there were anomalies in the money spent in a particular scheme and audit objection raised subsequently, Ms. Jayalalithaa could raise the issue in the Assembly sessions,” the Chief Minister said.

Clarifying that there was no contradiction in the estimated financial assessment report of Rs.750 crore towards the TV sets distribution project and the subsequent financial report which stated Rs.685 crore, the Chief Minister said that there was no anomaly in the financial allocation and that the remaining allotted amount was safe in the Government’s account.

The Chief Minister said the charges levelled against the DMK Government about the free TV sets distribution scheme was “totally baseless and unfounded and without any truth.”
