Hogenakkal scheme to be executed soon, says Stalin

KRISHNAGIRI: The long-pending Hogenakkal water supply and sanitation project will soon become a reality, Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin said on Sunday.

Launching the sixth phase of land distribution to the landless poor at Alapatti near here, he said a delegation from the Japan Bank of International Cooperation held several rounds of discussions with officials on the implementation of the project. The Government was awaiting approval from Japan, and it might enter into an agreement with the bank shortly.

The Government had revised the cost of the project from Rs.925 crore to Rs.1,334 crore. Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi would lay the foundation at a function in the first week of February.

Work on the Rs.616-crore Ramanathapuram combined water supply scheme was apace. It would be commissioned before the stipulated period of two years.

Free land distribution

Mr. Stalin said 1,33,688 acres of free land had so far been distributed to 1,16,508 poor people.

This apart, the Government had distributed 2.5 lakh house site titles to those living on porombok land for the past 10 years.

In Krishnagiri district, 2,701 acres, costing Rs.6.14 crore, was distributed to 3,818 small and marginal farmers, and 546.77 acres would be given away to 756 beneficiaries during the sixth phase.

Free house site titles had been distributed to 5,030 beneficiaries in the district so far.

BPO unit opened

The Minister inaugurated the second business process outsourcing unit-cum-call centre at Alapatti and new buildings constructed at the cost of Rs.24.92 crore and distributed welfare assistance to the tune of Rs.13.94 crore to 9,389 beneficiaries.
