Madivalas deserve SC tag, says M.P. Prakash

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: Former Deputy Chief Minister M.P. Prakash said on Sunday that the Madivala community (washer men) was one of the backward communities in society and it deserved the Scheduled Caste tag.

Speaking at a function organised by the Karnataka State Madivala Yuva Vedike here, Mr. Prakash said the Havanur and Venkataswamy committees had recommended that the Madivala community should be included in the Scheduled Castes.

The Kerala Government had included the Madivala (known by different name there) community in the Scheduled Caste list. Mr. Prakash said that the communities that were backward should be given lateral mobility for development either by policy initiatives or by social movements. When this social mobility was coupled with economic empowerment, society would be on the path to progress, he added.

He said there was an attempt to give internal reservation to a few communities in the State, but owing to political uncertainty that could not be achieved.

Giving benedictions on the occasion, Shivamurthy Murugha Sharnaru of Murugha Math of Chitraduga said backwardness was only in mind and one should awaken it with positive thinking.

That mindset could be achieved only when people had faith in god.

Sri Shivamurthy Murugha Sharanaru was felicitated by Srimachideva Maha Math and the vedike. He was honoured with the “Ananya Sadhaka” title.
