Plea to set up medical university

Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala needs a Medical University which will bring under one roof, all medicine systems recognised by the World Health Organisation, the Holistic Health Promotion Council (Samagra) has appealed to the government.

The WHO has defined ‘health’ as a state of physical, mental, spiritual, social and economic well-being of a person. The current health system in the State stresses more on curative treatment rather than the prevention of diseases.

In Kerala, the progress of the State’s health system is now measured more in terms of the increasing number of patients in health care institutions and the mushrooming of hospitals in the private sector, offering most modern facilities, Samagra has pointed out.

Even though several alternative and complementary systems of medicine, which focus on healing and prevention of diseases, are available in the State, these systems are at loggerheads in the State with each trying to establish dominance over the other. This has left the public confused and unable to choose treatment options, while at the same time pushing up health expenditure, Samagra has said.

In these circumstances, the government should take the initiative to bring together various systems of medicine under one umbrella and establish a medical university for promoting holistic medicine, it has appealed to the government.

Integration

Apart from alternative systems of treatment such as Sidha, Nature Cure, Acupressure, Acupuncture, SuJok, Reiki, Pranic Healing, Music therapy, yoga, Suryayog Meditation, Magneto therapy and Aromatherapy, the traditional knowledge of herbal medicines available with tribal people should also be revived and integrated, Samagra has said.

The establishment of a Medical University for promoting all proven systems of healing medicine alone will ensure that these systems develop and promote research in integrated medicine.
