Alvin also won the doubles title partnering Sankar P. Gopan Hersen and Linimol were adjudged Kerala’s most outstanding young players KOCHI: Alvin Francis, who gave Mahatma Gandhi University a sensational victory in the recent National varsities championship, won the men’s singles title in the third Peak Telecom Trophy South India inter-collegiate badminton tournament at the Rajiv Gandhi indoor stadium here on Sunday evening. Alvin defeated his Sacred Heart College-mate and university teammate P.H. Suraj 21-19, 21-14 in the singles final. A little later, he won the doubles title, pairing up with Sankar P. Gopan. Union Christian College’s Anumol Stanley bagged the women’s singles trophy. The ournament, organised by the Engineers Club, saw some of the brightest collegiate stars in action. The organisers also presented special awards to K.S. Hersen (boys) and Linimol Stanley (girls) who were adjudged as Kerala’s most outstanding young players. John Eype, Managing Director, Peak Telecom, gave away the prizes. The results: Men’s singles final: Alvin Francis (Sacred Heart, Thevara) bt P.H. Suraj (Sacred Heart, Thevara) 21-19, 21-14. Third place: Vijay Anand (St. Joseph’s, Chennai) bt Arjun Prasad (CUSAT, Kochi) 21-11, 21-12. Semifinals: Alvin bt Arjun (CUSAT) 21-14, 21-9; Suraj bt Vijay 21-14, 21-10. Men’s doubles final: Alvin Francis / Sankar Gopan (SH, Kochi) bt Vijay Anand / Aloysius Vijay (St. Joseph’s, Chennai) 21-17, 21-12. Semifinals: Alvin / Sankar bt Dileep T. Jacob / Vinod Shankar (SH) 21-8, 21-15; Vijay / Aloysius bt P.H. Suraj / K.S. Hersen (SH) 21-17, 21-13. Women’s singles final: Anumol Stanley (UC, Aluva) bt Deepa (SH, Thevara) 21-1, 21-1.
