KOCHI: The Fort Kochi YMCA, which has produced many State basketballers, celebrated the 116th anniversary of the introduction of basketball at its premises here. A one-day tournament for veterans, which was won by Don Bosco (Vaduthala), beating Eloor’s Vadakkal Club 56-42, a free throw competition topped by P.N. Muhsin and closely followed by India player Abdul Majeed, Saji Joseph and Kurian Cherian, and a basketball quiz were part of the celebrations. The week-long event concluded on Sunday and former National coach Thomas Fenn, former Cochin College Physical Education Director, Prof. M.D. Varadarajan, and Sunny Cherian, who played a big role in starting the game at the Fort Kochi YMCA, were honoured at the closing ceremony. K.P. Philip, former National General Secretary, YMCAs, and a former General Secretary, Kochi YMCA, inaugurated the final day’s function and former players, V.J. Mathew, Hassan Koya, Abdul Majeed, John Casmiri, along with Joy Clarence and former MLA, M.A. Thomas, spoke. — Principal Correspondent
