Melbourne: He is Australia’s most successful wicketkeeper, but Adam Gilchrist reveals he almost gave up his gloves at one stage to concentrate on his batting before legendary stumper Rodney Marsh talked him out of self-doubt. The 36-year-old said he was on the verge of giving up keeping when he failed to get a place as a keeper in his state side New South Wales but was advised not to do so by Marsh. “I suggested to Rod Marsh perhaps I should stay in NSW and just play as a specialist batsman,” Gilchrist was quoted as saying in the Herald Sun. “He just laughed me off and said ‘no way’. Attaining that sort of belief from someone like that is huge,” he recalled. Gilchrist said all along his long career there were moments when he lost faith in his ability and cited the 2005 Ashes series as being one of those trying them. “There was a bit of self doubt and there’s been tough moments,” he said.
However, the affable left-hander said surpassing Healy’s record has made him a lot more confident about himself. “I’m just really thrilled to have achieved the record, it’s not something I thought would happen. — PTI
