RAJAPALAYAM: The district administration has, so far, issued 8,450 free house site pattas, exceeding its target of 8,385 fixed for the current year, the Minister for Backward Classes Welfare, K.K.S.S.R. Ramchandran, said. Speaking at a function in connection with the sixth phase of free land distribution to small and marginal farmers here on Sunday, the Minister appreciated the Collector and other officials for the good work. “Now, (unlike in the past) the Chief Minister (M. Karunandhi) is not carrying a whip on his hand against the officials. However, they all are putting in extra efforts for the overall development of the State and the people,” he said. The district administration has sought the State Government approval for giving away 3,000 additional house site pattas, the Minister said. A total of 2,004 pattas were given on Sunday. The total value of house sites given so far is Rs.92.56 lakh, he added. The Minister said that a medical camp would be held at Virudhunagar on Jaunary 5 to screen children up to the age of 12 years for heart ailments by medical officers from Madurai. The Government would bear the expenditure of heart surgeries to be carried out either at Government hospitals or select private hospitals. Similarly, children with cleft lips and palate would also be screened on the day, he added. Presiding over the function, the Collector, V. Chandrasekaran, said that all eligible people (who have resided at a place for more than 10 years) would get house site pattas by March 2008. A total of 4.78 lakh dhoties and sarees would be distributed for Pongal. 586.75 acres givenA total of 4,146 beneficiaries have been given 586.75 acres of land worth Rs.65.35 lakh in the district in the six phase of land distribution. Besides, 7,694.91 acres of private land were made cultivable at a cost of Rs.39.24 lakh. The District Revenue Officer, S. Malarvizhi, the Revenue Divisional Officers, B. Ganesan and O. Venkatesan, the district Panchayat President, A. Kadarkarairaj, the Rajapalayam Municipal Chairperson, R. Rathinamammal, the Rajapalayam Panchayat Union Chairperson, Indirani Dhanushkodi, were among those who spoke.
