Isaac sees threat to reforms

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The call from certain sections for students to study in schools run by their respective communities is a challenge to educational reforms and social renaissance that had swept the State, Finance Minister T.M. Thomas Isaac has said.

He was delivering the keynote address on ‘Education and social justice’ at the inauguration of the 75th Sivagiri pilgrimage on Sunday.

Dr. Isaac said Sree Narayana Guru taught the significance of making education a tool for progress.

It was the thrust on education that paved the way for progress and development of Kerala, compared with other States, including Punjab.

In spite of the achievements, certain people have said that Christian, Nair, Ezhava and Muslim students should study in the schools run by their own communities.

This, in effect, defies the social achievements made through education. The credit for high expectancy, low death rate and other developments can be attributed to education, he said.

Education is like a twin-edged sword that can be used for suppression and liberation. The Guru propagated that education can act as a means of liberation. He played a pivotal role in changing the content and also universalising education. Moreover, the first proletarian revolt was not for increased wages, but the right to education.

Dr. Isaac, who laid the stone for a convention centre at Sivagiri, said the government would give all assistance to set up the centre at the earliest.
