Provide assistance to Keladi Utsav, Government urged

Special Correspondent

The event, to be held on January 5, will recall the history of Keladi dynasty

Recognition: Advocate K. Diwakar being felicitated by Maheshwar Shivacharya Swamiji for his contribution to the Keladi Utsav, at Keladi in Sagar taluk on Sunday.

SAGAR (SHIMOGA DISTRICT): Maheshwar Shivacharya Swamiji of the Keladi Rajaguru Hiremath on Sunday sought the help and cooperation of the State Government and various associations and organisations for the success of Keladi Utsav to be held on January 5.

Presiding over the meeting convened at the Keladi Rameshawara temple to discuss the preparations for the utsav, he said it was important to note that the Keladi dynasty rulers, who governed parts of the State after the Vijayanagar emperors, were known for their political sagacity, social service and religious contribution throughout south India.

The swamiji said that Shivappa Nayaka and Chennamma of Keladi dynasty had been accorded proper place in the annals of history as they had won the appreciation of people for their benevolent and bold administration.

He emphasised the need for celebrating the utsav in a befitting manner and appealed the Government to offer necessary financial assistance for its successful conduct.

Philanthropist and high court advocate K. Diwakar, who was felicitated on the occasion for his contribution to the utsav, referred to the efforts being made in Western countries to keep alive the memory of artists, poets and visionaries for their contribution to society.

“It is unfortunate that significant contribution of many Indian rulers has gone unnoticed by historians,” he said and regretted that Chennamma, who ruled confidently for over 25 years facing odds, did not receive the kind of prominence in the pages of history that she deserved.

Mr. Diwakar said it was not enough if the Government arranged cultural jathas only in cultural and historical places around Bangalore. He suggested that important cultural events should be held in smaller places of historical importance. Referring to the Government’s sanction of Rs. 1 crore to the 73rd Kannada Sahitya Sammelan held in Shimoga last year, he urged the Government to make a similar contribution to the Keladi Utsav in appreciation of its cultural and historical importance.

He suggested that the utsav be held every year on a specific day, ensuring the participation of all communities.

President of the Keladi Gram Panchayat Satyanarayana presided over the felicitation function.

Gunda Jois and Venkatesh Jois of the Keladi Historical Museum, members of the organising committee of the utsav R.C. Manjappa, Kumara Gowda, V.T. Swamy, M.S. Nanjundaswamy and journalist Deepak Sagar were present.
