THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Chief Conservator of Forest (Wildlife), Palakkad will probe the death of the calf elephants in the Kodanad Elephant Centre. The Chief Wildlife Warden said here on Sunday that the two-year-old Aswathy, which came from Aralam in Kannur, and Niranjan, which was rescued from Mattupetty, were the calves that died. Both had shown symptoms of acute virus attack. Lab reportThe possibilities of treating and curing the disease were remote as it led to death within a few hours. As soon as the symptoms of the disease were detected, treatment was started under the supervision of doctors of the Forest and Animal Husbandry Departments who specialised in the treatment of elephants. The final diagnosis could be made only after getting the laboratory report. The doctors had shifted the other elephants in the Centre and were keeping a close watch on them. They were being given medicines against virus and bacteria attack. Senior forest officials were camping in the place.
