PAP water released

Pollachi: Water was released from Tirumurthy reservoir, near here, on Sunday for irrigation of 98,700 acres in Coimbatore and Erode district. These ayacuts areas under the first zone of Parambikulam Aliyar Project (PAP) of Public Works Department will get water for 90 days in six wettings after a gap of two years. Officials led by Executive Engineer P. Thangavel of PWD opened the sluice gates. According to R. Manickam, superintending engineer of the PAP, the Government has issued orders to release water from Sunday, as proposed by the authorities here following a consultation with heads of Water Users’ Associations under the PAP. Water will be released for 17 days continuously for five wettings after a gap of six days in each wetting. A total of 38,500 acres in Udumalpet taluk will get benefit while Dharapuram taluk in Erode district get water for21,000 acres. Pollachi and Palladam taluks receive water for 15,000 acres and 16,600 acres respectively. Kangeyam taluk in Erode district will get water for 7,600 acresAuthorities appealed to the farmers to use water judiciously.
