CPI (M) plans ‘Chalo Assembly’ in March

Staff Reporter

GUNTUR: ‘Chalo Assembly’ programme with lakhs of people will be organised on March 17 focusing mainly on pending land distribution to the poor all over the State and other major issues related to the poor, according to D. Rama Devi, who has been re-elected Communist Party of India (Marxist) Guntur secretary. Addressing media persons here on Sunday, Ms. Rama Devi said that Guntur district conference discussed at length various people’s issues neglected by the Government.

Job scheme

Benefits of Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme did not reach the poor as desired by the Central Government. The key to the implementation of the scheme was identification of beneficiaries through proper verification in each village and giving job cards and it was not being done properly. Payments that were supposed to be done every week do not reach the poor even after three months, she observed.

The district unit proposed to hold massive awareness campaigns throughout the district from February 10 to March 17 before sending a large contingent to participate in the ‘Chalo Assembly’ programme. “Renewed Bhooporatam will be kicked off from March-end to ensure the poor, who had already occupied the land got pattas from the Government,” said Ms. Rama Devi.

The newly-elected district committee of the party at the end of the three-day conference comprised 17 members below 50 years and 12 above that.

While 20 of the 29 members belonged to forward caste, three were from Scheduled Caste, six from Backward Classes and among them only two were women.

The representation of women had come down from four to two.
