PUDUCHERRY: Two persons were killed and one person was seriously injured when a sand-laden lorry crashed into the front portion of a wayside shop, a shamiana rental agency, at Koodapakkam near Villianur on Saturday night. The deceased were identified as Parthasarathy (33) of Ariyapalayam and Mannar (43) of Koodapakkam. According to the Villianur police, the driver of the lorry, owned by a resident of Kanavapet in Villianur, lost control of the vehicle while negotiating a curve at the Koodapakkam junction. The lorry was speeding to avoid being noticed by a night patrol team, according to traffic policemen. Parthasarathy, who came to collect a shamiana for building a temporary shed for a funeral, died on the spot when the walls of the shop fell on him. As the lorry crashed into shop, the vehicle tilted slightly throwing sand on Mannar, police said. He was admitted to hospital, where he died. Siva, a resident of Ariyapalayam, who had accompanied Parthasarathy, escaped with injuries. He was admitted to the General Hospital. Police said the lorry driver fled from the scene. Sand quarryingThe accident happened amid complaints of illegal sand quarrying, especially in the Villianur belt. Scores of trucks and tippers transport sand from the area to different parts of Puducherry and Tamil Nadu.
