Lawyers World Cup is on the lines of the Twenty-20 ‘A new chapter in international legal fraternity’

HYDERABAD: For some of the best legal brains from six countries, the Lawyers World Cup, which was formally inaugurated by Chief Justice of India Justice K. G. Balakrishnan, at Rajiv Gandhi Stadium (Uppal) on Sunday, can well be a perfect year-ender to take a break from their routine and revel with the willow. Conceptualised by R. Santhankrishnan, president of Indian Advocates Cricket Association, the event is on the lines of the Twenty-20 World Cup. “This is great fun to be at a fantastic venue and such ambience,” acknowledged Pakistan captain Atir Mehmood. So does West Indian captain Prakash Moosai, who also happens to be the Judge of Trinidad High Court besides scoring 16 centuries in club grade cricket against some of the big names back in the Caribbean Islands. “These kind of events ensure that it is not just all work but no play. This also gives a chance for the legal experts to share experiences and new thoughts on the varied subjects concerning the fraternity,” he observed in a chat with The Hindu. “This is a fabulous and historic city with lots of secret treasures on offer. Enjoy those much more than cricket,” remarked renowned advocate Ram Jethmalani. “And my special thanks to Pakistan team for coming over here despite the situation back home,” he explained. But more seriously, CJI Balakrishnan said it was a privilege to host the event and hoped that the participants would have a great week in the City. “This should be a new chapter in international legal fraternity and a permanent feature,” he remarked. Well, when acting Chief Justice of AP High Court Bilal Nazki, dressed in all whites and donning the wicket-keeping pads to play an exhibition match along with N. Shivlal Yadav, secretary of HCA, and others, it was symbolic of the motto of the event - Cricket for Friendship.
