Rythu Sangham urges TTD to use local rice

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Rythu Sangham, affiliated to the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has urged the Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy to intervene and see that the Tirumala-Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) reviews its decision to use Basmati rice. The TTD board had recently announced its decision to use only Basmati rice for the preparation of ‘prasadam’ and for all its needs. In a letter to Dr. Reddy, the Sangham recalled that superfine rice was being produced in the State and quoted as examples, the Samba Masuri B.P.T and Sona Masuri varieties.

The production of these varieties was so much that after meeting local needs, they were being exported, at an average of 60 to 70 lakh tonnes a year.

Demand

Also, in tune with the domestic demand, rice was being sourced from Punjab, the Sangham said, citing statistics.
