Promoting awareness about AIDS

A special programme for cycle-rickshaw pullers organised

Basic information on STD, HIV/AIDS shared

Similar sessions in other areas planned

NEW DELHI: To create awareness about the menace of AIDS, Hamara Vikas, a Delhi-based non-government organisation, organised a special programme for cycle-rickshaw pullers near the Nizamuddin railway station here this past week.

The programme was aimed at educating the cycle-rickshaw pullers about AIDS and how to keep the deadly disease at bay. The cycle-rickshaw pullers were given basic information on sexually transmitted diseases, HIV/AIDS and use of condom as safer sex practices.

The organisation has also earmarked a strategy through which several other activities will be carried out in various parts of the city for cycle-rickshaw pullers.

Speaking on the occasion, Hamara Vikas spokesperson Jagdish Pandey, said: “According to recent United Nations and the U.S. AID-backed government estimates, the number of people living with HIV/AIDS in the country was an alarming 2.47 million. The prevalence level of HIV infection is around 0.36 per cent of the country’s more than 1.1 billion population and it would require commitment and expertise to fight it.” Mr. Pandey said there was an urgent need to strengthen the population’s knowledge and understanding of HIV/AIDS.

Working for a long time with cycle-rickshaw pullers, Mr. Pandey said he had approached several organisations and institutions to come forward and support Hamara Vikas to fight this deadly disease. Hamara Vikas was founded in 2003 and started its activities with one non-formal child education and vocational training centre for women in Lal Kuan here. Its activities now cover occupational health, public health like TB, child development, employment generation.
