Deve Gowda anguished

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: The former Prime Minister, H.D. Deve Gowda, has “expressed shock and anguish” at the attacks on minorities in Kandhmal district of Orissa.

In a statement issued here on Sunday, Mr. Gowda said: “I am shocked and anguished by the news reports of communal violence engineered by sangh parivar elements in that district of Orissa. That the nation should be a witness to such communal clashes even after 60 years of Independence was most unfortunate.”

The violence once again exposed the ugly face of the communal forces that had unsuccessfully tried to create a Hindutva laboratory even in Karnataka. They were effectively thwarted during the 20-month rule of the JD(S) led by H.D. Kumaraswamy, he said.

Mr. Gowda appealed to Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik to provide all possible relief to the riot affected and ensure the safety and security of the minorities.
