KOLKATA: Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee on Sunday announced the launch of a front, the Progressive Secular Democratic (PSD) Front that comprises 16 parties. Ms. Banerjee said at a meeting here that 16 parties had agreed to join the Front. Waving a sheet of paper, she said all of them had signed pledging to join the Front. The list included the Indian Union Muslim League, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, the Samajwadi Party and the Janata Dal (Secular). The Front would take on the Left Front in the coming panchayat elections in West Bengal and all parties opposed to the CPI(M) were welcome to join, she said. The parties which did not join the Trinamool in its agitations could not suddenly come and join the coalition with an eye on the elections. “This would not be fair. It would also not be acceptable to people.” Ms. Banerjee, who would head the new coalition, earlier addressed a meeting of the Krishi Jibika Raksha Committee (Committee for protection of livelihood rights of farmers). The Front is slated to hold a meeting on January 8 and chalk out its agenda.
