Between Madurai and Rameswaram Private firm is undertaking survey RAMANATHAPURAM: The preliminary survey work on laying four-lane road on NH 49 between Madurai and Rameswaram would be completed shortly, said the Minister for Slum Clearance, S. Thangavelan. Handing over free colour television sets to beneficiaries at a function at Pirappanvalasai near here on Monday, he said that a private firm was undertaking the survey work for preparing alignment and other aspects of the road work. However, there was some delay in completing the survey, owing to apprehension raised by some persons that the proposed alignment would affect their land and commercial holdings. Final proposalMr. Thangavelan said that the final proposal would be prepared in such a way that the proposed road would not touch the congested places in Paramakudi, Manamadurai, Thirubuvanam and other areas. Similarly, the preliminary work on the four-lane road on Ramanathapuram-Tiruchi (NH 210) highway would also be taken up shortly. Considering the urgent need of improving the Other District Roads (ODR), which were in a bad condition in the district, Mr. Thangavelan said nearly 200 km stretch of ODR work would be taken up in 2008. Officials were asked to speed up the process of getting funds. The Member of Parliament, M.S.K. Bhavani Rajendran, said that the Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi had been implementing numerous innovative people-oriented schemes in the district. K. Hasan Ali, MLA, said that the Government should take speedy steps to restore uninterrupted power supply. It was unfortunate that a section of beneficiaries, who were receiving free television sets, were selling them for cheap rates, he said. A. Ravichandra Ramavanni, Chairman, District Panchayat, and A. Tamil Mani, District Revenue Officer, spoke.
