MEMORABLE EVENING: Sujatha, G. Venugopal and Shwetha during the performance. The Zamorin’s HSS Ground in Kozhikode played host to four of the most pleasing voices in Malayalam film music on Sunday. G. Venugopal, Sujatha, Shwetha and Devanand presented the audience an evening to remember. They rendered some of the most popular melodies of the year — and a few from yesteryears — at the musical evening presented by Lions Club. Shwetha captivated the audience with the clarity of her voice, excellent control over pitch, ‘bhava’ and uncomplicated style of singing. Right from her first song of the show, ‘Mandarapoo…’ (Vinodayathra), which was also the first big hit of her career, she was able to make an impression in what was her maiden stage appearance in Kozhikode. She was also at ease with songs rendered originally by others. When Sujatha sang the ‘pallavi’ of ‘Thattam pidich…’ (Paradesi) the crowd cheered loudly. Her rendition of ‘Kandu kandu…’ (Mambazhakalam) was also as good. Venugopal was class apart as he sang two hits from different stages of his career — ‘Kai niraye…’ (Baba Kalyani) and ‘Unarumee…’ (Moonnam Pakkam). Devanand impressed with his rendition of ‘Thirike njaan…’ (Arabikatha), sung originally by Yesudas. With Sujatha, he recreated the charm of the melodious Vidyasagar composition, ‘Karimizhikuruviye…’ (Meesa Madhavan). Earlier, music director Rajamani was presented the Lions Region award. Hindustani musician Sharat Chandra Marathe was also honoured. P. K. Ajith Kumar
