Tragic end to New Year celebration

Staff Reporter

Man falls off houseboat and drowns

ALAPPUZHA: The general manager of a private coir manufacturing and exporting firm at Cherthala met with a tragic end here on Monday while celebrating the New Year eve along with his family and friends. Pollock Roy Chowdhary, 44, had rented a houseboat along with his friends and families on Monday morning.

However, five minutes after the boat began its cruise at 11 a.m., Chowdhary slipped and fell into the water. Personnel of the Police and the Fire and Rescue Services had to toil for nearly three hours to trace the body before it was recovered from the backwaters near Nedumudi at around 2.30 p.m.

Chowdhary, a native of Kolkota, was staying at Maradu panchayat near Ernakulam for the last 18 months after taking over as the general manager of the Cherthala-based private coir factory. He is survived by his wife and children.

The police said the body would be handed over to relatives after a post-mortem examination on Tuesday.
