M. Mallikarjun Kharge HOSPET (BELLARY DISTRICT): President of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee M. Mallikarjun Kharge has said that only the Congress, which had ensured the welfare of the poor, backward classes and farmers in the past, could offer good governance. He appealed to the people to support it in the coming elections. Addressing a meeting organised as part of the party’s “Janandolana” here on Sunday, Mr. Kharge said that during the 20-month rule of the Janata Dal (Secular)-Bharatiya Janata Party coalition Government, the people were forced to face various kinds of inconveniences as the combine had failed to implement its promises. Expressing the confidence that the people would not fall prey to the “baits” of the two parties again, he asked them to prevent the BJP from coming to power. He said the Congress remained united with all its leaders striving for the party’s success. ‘BJP responsible’The former Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, while holding the Janata Dal (S) and the BJP responsible for forcing another mid-term election in the State, said that leaders of the two parties were now busy making allegations against each other instead of focussing on people’s welfare. Recalling the welfare steps taken during the Congress rule in the past, he expressed the confidence that his party would come back to power on its own. The former Minister, D.K. Shivakumar, while describing the Janata Dal (S)-BJP coalition as anti-farmer, accused it of having failed to make use of the Vidharbha package granted to the State, to prevent farmer suicides. The former Deputy Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah said the BJP would not win even 50 seats in the elections. Senior party leader Jaffer Sharief expressed shock over seven members of the minority community winning the civic body elections in Bellary on BJP ticket and wanted the party to treat the matter seriously.
