Raje Government unfit to continue, say activists

Panel gives poor review of four years of BJP rule in Rajasthan

‘Incidents of corruption, atrocities against women and Dalits touched new levels’

State Government’s policies on SEZs, liquor contracts and promotion of MNCs condemned

JAIPUR: Activist groups and intellectuals who reviewed the four years of the Vasundhara Raje Government in Rajasthan this weekend described it as “unfit” to continue in power. The misery of the common man found a manifold increase in the current regime’s time with incidents of corruption, breakdown of law and order and atrocities against women and Dalits touching new levels, they said.

Eminent participants

The participants, who included social activists, retired members of the Civil Services and the judiciary besides academics, found fault with the State Government’s policies on Special Economic Zones, liquor contracts and promotion of multinational corporations such as Pepsi Cola and Coca Cola. The debate on ‘Four years of BJP Government: the real picture’ was organised by the Rajasthan Samagra Sewa Sangh.

Justice (Retd.) Pana Chand Jain, who presided over the proceedings, said it was unjustifiable on the part of the Government to give away farmers’ land to business houses for setting up special economic zones. He also suggested a boycott of electoral candidates who oppose the demand for total prohibition in the State.

Awareness campaign

Samagra Sewa Sangh president Sawai Singh sought a public awareness campaign for bringing about a change in the existing system. The Government’s policies ensured quality water to the MNC soft drink units and polluted water to citizens, he charged.

Participants in the programme, addressed by writer Ved Vyas, PUCL Rajasthan president Prem Krishna Sharma and All-India Congress Committee secretary Sanjay Bafna, among others, expressed concern over the growing conflicts over caste and religion in the State and activities of the land mafia.

Despite claims of good governance and efficient fiscal management the indebtedness of the State had reached an all-time high of Rs.76,000 crores, they pointed out.

The groups decided to hold a demonstration in protest against the policies of the Government in front of the State Assembly during the Budget session.
