ZP to spend Rs. 5 cr. on schools’ furniture

Kakinada: The East Godavari Zilla Parishad has targeted to provide furniture at a cost of Rs. 5 crore in 2008-09 for upper primary schools under its purview and supply study material free of cost to students of 8th, 9th and 10th classes, for which a sum of Rs. 67 lakh was earmarked.

Speaking to media persons here on Monday, ZP Chairman Ch. Venugopala Krishna said it has also been decided to lay CC roads and construct drains in the habitations of SCs and STs at a cost of Rs.17.65 crore by pooling the ZP funds and grants under National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme.

The ZP has allocated Rs. 3 crore for the construction of 150 Anganwadi centres under the aegis of the Women and Child Welfare Department.

Water purifiers costing Rs. 50 lakh would be supplied to schools not covered in 2007-08. Rs. 10 lakh would be spent for training women in vocational skills at Durgabai Mahila Sisu Vikas Kendra at Bommuru.

Financial aid

Greater emphasis was sought to be laid on alleviating the plight of the disabled by extending financial assistance through banks.

In 2007-08, construction of 60 Anganwadi centres was taken up at a cost of Rs. 1.2 crore.

Loans amounting to Rs. 307.35 crore were disbursed to self-help groups as against the target of Rs. 430 crore. From 2004 till date, Rs. 889 crore was distributed as loans under ‘Pavala vaddi’ scheme.

The ZP is giving cash prizes up to Rs. 1 lakh to those achieving 1 to 10 ranks at the State level to encourage healthy competition.

A total of 431 ‘Aqua guards’ were distributed to primary schools to provide clean drinking water to the children. The State Government has recently sanctioned Rs 5.1 crore for rural road works.

ZP Chief Executive Officer D. Nagesh Babu and Deputy CEO Md. Ismail were among those present.
