Blood donation camp held as part of final rites of nonagenarian

BERHAMPUR: A blood donation camp was organised as part of the funeral rituals of a 96-year-old woman at Digapahandi in Ganjam district. Fifty-one persons, including 31 women, donated blood in memory of the departed soul.

The family members of the aggrieved family had decided to hold the blood donation camp on the eleventh day of her death, the day on which apart from the traditional rituals and mass feast was also held in memory of the departed soul. The departed soul was V. Mahalaxmi. social worker, was part and parcel of her family as she happened to wife of late V. Balaji Raju, a prominent freedom fighter of Ganjam district.

According to president of the local voluntary blood donors association, V. Dharmaraju, they had decided to use this occasion to create awareness among people that any occasion can be made memorable through voluntary blood donation. In-charge of the blood bank at MKCG Medical College of the city Bharat Patnaik also reached the spot to monitor this special blood donation camp.

Initially the family members of the deceased donated blood at the camp.
