The twists and turns that led to Keltec takeover

Special Correspondent

A.K. Antony

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: It was a somewhat unique event that those gathered at the inauguration of BrahMos Aerospace Thiruvananthapuram Ltd. were witness to here on Monday evening.

The man who took the final decision for establishment of the prestigious defence production unit in the Kerala capital by taking over the State-government-owned Kerala Hitech Ltd. (Keltec) was also the man who first made the plea to the Union government for the takeover of the ailing State public sector unit.

While speaking at the function, Mr. Antony recalled how as Chief Minister, he had responded to the plea from Keltec management and trade unions and sent a memorandum to the then Defence Minister for takeover of the company. The plea was turned down on the ground that there was no use for such a unit. Later, when he became Defence Minister, the same plea was submitted to him by the Kerala Industries Minister Elamaram Karim.

Mr. Antony said though he had endorsed the plea from the State government, his own request was turned down by the Defence Ministry and that prompted him to think of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). Although there was resistance to the takeover of the unit by DRDO, he was able to overcome that thanks to support from top scientists, such as BrahMos Aerospace Chief Executive Officer A. Sivathanu Pillai and Indian Space Research Organisation Chairman G. Madhavan Nair and an enthusiastic follow-up of the proposal by Mr. Karim, Mr. Antony recalled.
