Bypolls: mixed fortune for Congress, TDP

HYDERABAD: It was mixed fortune for the Congress and the Telugu Desam Party in the by-elections to the Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituencies (ZPTC) and Mandal Parishad Territorial Constituencies (MPTC).

The TDP retained the Chagalamarri and Venkatapur ZPTC in Kurnool and Warangal district, respectively, while the Bellamkonda ZPTC was won by the Congress. Elections to the Bellamkonda, Chagalamarri and Venkatapur ZPTC seats and 26 MPTC seats were held on December 29. The MPTC seats were in Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, East Godavari, Krishna, Guntur, Prakasam, Chittoor, Anantapur, Kurnool, Ranga Reddy, Adilabad, Karimnagar and Nalgonda. Counting of votes was taken up on Monday.

In the by-election to the Chagalamarri ZPTC, TDP nominee B. Ramasubbaiah defeated his Congress rival by a margin of 1,023 votes. In the MPTC polls, Congress won 15 seats, leaving nine to the TDP and two to independents.
