Superintendent of Police rejects villagers’ plea ARIYALUR: Strict action would be taken against those violating the ban on ‘jallikattu’ or ‘manju virattu’ during the festival season, and criminal proceedings would be launched against those defying the ban, Superintendent of Police S. Muthusamy said. Speaking at the weekly grievances day meeting held here on Monday, Mr. Muthusamy said a few villagers had submitted petitions to Collector V.M. Xavier Chrisso Nayagam seeking special permission for conducting ‘jallikattu’ or ‘manju virattu’ as part of temple rituals during the Pongal festival. Since such rituals often resulted in the participants or the onlookers suffering either grievous or fatal injuries they had been banned, he said. Rejecting the villagers’ plea, Mr. Mutuhsamy appealed to the villagers not to seek permission from any police station in the district for conducting ‘jallikattu’. He warned that the police would be left with no option but to initiate criminal proceedings against those violating the ban.
