Singareni strike likely to be called off

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: The Singareni Collieries Workers’ Union (SCWU) has deferred its decision to go on an indefinite strike from Monday midnight, following an assurance from the government that it would refrain from collection of professional tax from employees.

On Monday evening a delegation led by senior Congress leader G. Venkatswamy and Labour Minister G. Vinod called on Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy to discuss the issue. The delegation also included SCWU president B.Venkat Rao and several MLAs from Assembly constituencies falling in the coal belt spread over Adilabad, Karimnagar, Khammam and Warangal districts.

Mr. Vinod later said the exemption would allow a monetary benefit of over Rs. 10 crore annually to the non-executive staff of Singareni.
