No women’s organisation has come forward to help the victim KOLAR: For this 20-year-old girl, November 26 was a nightmarish day. It was on the night of that day this girl from Makireddipalli village in Bagepalli taluk was allegedly gang raped by four youths. The victim, who was working in a hotel in Bangalore, was waiting for a bus to Makireddipalli at Bagapalli when around 10 p.m., Rajkumar, an autorickshaw driver, reportedly approached her and told her that he would take her to the village. As there was no sign of any bus, she agreed. On the way to Makireddipalli, Rajkumar’s three friends Manjunath, Praveen and Manjunath got into the autorickshaw. They allegedly raped the girl at a remote place on the way and fled. When the incident came to light, the people of the village staged a protest. Subsequently, the police arrested three of the accused, including Rajkumar. Unfortunately, no women’s organisation came forward to help the victim. But, Subbaramappa, who was in the forefront of the agitation seeking justice to the victim, took the responsibility of rehabilitating her. Mr. Subbaramappa, a prominent leader of the Valmiki community, and his wife Sunandamma took the victim to their house where she is now living with them like their family member. “The government should help this girl to lead an independent life. We are also thinking about her marriage. She should leave behind the agony and live happily,” Mr. Subbaramappa says.
