Plant coming up on 38-acre plot at Brahmapuram Civic body to finalise green belt proposal soon KOCHI: The countdown for the solid waste treatment plant at Brahmapuram has started. If the construction of the Brahmapuram plant progresses as expected, the plant will become operational in 40 days. According to the present schedule, the plant will be commissioned on February 20. The loading of waste at the plant will begin on February 10 and the plant will be operated on a trial basis for the next 10 days, said Mini Antony, secretary of the Kochi Corporation. The plant is coming up on 38 acres at Brahmapuram. The roofing works of three of the buildings of the plant have started. Altogether, there will be 11 buildings at the site including the treatment plant, tool room and office room. The electrical and mechanical works of the plant have also started. The flooring works of some of the buildings are also in the final stage. According to the officials associated with the construction of the plant, the machinery of the plant is expected to be brought to the site on January 15. The tender for the compound wall of the plant will soon be floated. The Corporation will also soon finalise a proposal for setting up a green belt around the plant site. The civic body has also initiated the land acquisition process for an exclusive road to the Brahmapuram site. Once the plant becomes operational as per the present schedule, full-fledged processing of the municipal waste from Kochi will begin in March. The plant has an installed capacity to process 250 tonnes of waste every day. A vermi compost unit will also become operational at the site. The Corporation has also plans to set up a recycling unit along with the plant for processing plastic waste that is collected from the city.
