Apparel training, design centre commissioned

With machinery and teaching equipment worth Rs.30 lakh



New facility: Union Minister of Information Technology and Communications A. Raja, extreme right, inaugurating the Apparel Training Centre in Perambalur on Sunday.

PERAMBALUR: The fifth Apparel Training and Design Centre (ATDC) in the State was commissioned in the district on Sunday by Union Minister for Communications and Information Technology A. Raja.

Sponsored by the Apparel Export Promotion Council, Union Ministry of Textiles, the Perambalur facility, established to empower women and employable youth, is the 38th in the country.

The four other centres in Tamil Nadu are at Tirupur, Dharmapuri, and Guindy and Mogappair in Chennai.

The centre, commissioned on the premises of the Poomalai Marketing Complex has been provided with machinery and teaching equipment worth Rs. 30 lakh by the district administration.

Sewing machine operator training

The new centre will offer sewing machine operator training to suit the needs of readymade garment manufacturers in Tirupur, Coimbatore, Erode, Salem and Chennai. It will train 600 to 1,000 persons in 2008 at the rate of 60 a batch.

While the district administration will spend Rs. 1,600 per trainee, besides providing training kit and offering daily stipend of Rs. 40 each, the centre would bear the recurring expenses

Sixth centre

Mr. Raja announced that steps had been initiated to open the sixth centre in the newly-formed Ariyalur district within a year.

The opening of three Industrial Training Institutes and such centres in Perambalur and Ariyalur districts, against the backdrop of the impending creation of a massive Special Economic Zone on a 3,500 acre expanse, would prepare the locals in the backward districts to make the most of future opportunities in a few year’s time, Mr. Raja said.

The President of Tirupur Exporters’ Association and Chairman, Technical Sub-Committee, AEPC, A. Sakthivel, said the trainees have been guaranteed jobs with monthly earnings of up to Rs. 7,000.

B.V. Somasekar, Deputy Director General, ATDC, assured that the centre would shortly be upgraded to a full-fledged one with computer-aided design (CAD) facility.

Collector Anil Meshram presided. Collector of Ariyalur District V. M. Xavier Chrisso Nayagam was present.
