KARUR: After the promises made during the run-up to the last Assembly elections having been met by the DMK regime, a situation was now prevailing wherein the State Government was looking at taking up fresh welfare and development schemes in the State, Highways Minister Vellakovil M.P. Swaminathan said here on Sunday. Speaking at a function organised at Gandhigram here to mark the sixth phase of free two-acre land distribution scheme, Mr. Swaminathan said that right from the day Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi assuemed office, the Government headed by him had been working for the uplift of downtrodden and the poor by formulating and implementing various social and economic welfare schemes and development projects. From the next year, the ‘Anaithu Grama Anna Marumalarchi Thittam’ would be extended to urban areas, municipalities and corporation limits too. The novel scheme of ration rice at Rs. 2 a kg, waiver of agricultural cooperative loans to the tune of Rs. 7,000 crore and providing two eggs a week to noon meal beneficiaries were to come first and more schemes were built on their foundation. The State Government’s welfare schemes covered the baby in the womb to the aged and invalid. The physically challenged persons too were enjoying the benefits of new schemes in a more cohesive fashion. Educated unemployed youth were being given doles. Weavers and farmers were getting free power. He distributed Rs. 1.40 crore worth benefits to a total of 2,675 beneficiaries. Karur Collector T.N. Venkatesh said that in the previous five phases 2,774 beneficiaries received 4,274.17 acres of land free from encroachment. Under the improvement of wasteland, 4,774 acres were developed and disbursed in the district. In the sixth phase 30.70 acres were being distributed to 48 persons, while regularisation of poromboke land under encroachment led to distribution of 32.85 acres to 54 persons. Development of wastelands scheme had 584 beneficiaries getting 1,231 acres. Karur MP K.C. Palanisamy; DMK district secretary Vasuki Murugesan; MLAs P. Kamaraj (Krishnarayapuram), R. Manikkam (Kulithalai), and District Panchayat chairperson Poovai Ramesh Babu spoke. PudukottaiAs many as 1,345 landless agricultural labourers received land under the sixth phase of the scheme in the district on Sunday. Speaking after distributing the land pattas, Minister for Environment T.P.M. Mohideen Khan said that the total extent of the land distributed now was 897 acres worth about Rs.2.17 crore. He attributed the expeditious implementation of the programme to the State Government’s policy on improving the socio-economic status of the economically weaker sections. He also distributed house-site pattas worth about Rs.1.55 crore to 7,915 beneficiaries on the occasion. Collector D. Uthirakkumaran said that with the implementation of the sixth phase, the number of beneficiaries had risen to 9,176 in the district. Land to a cumulative extent of 7,129 acres worth about Rs.14.25 crore had been distributed. The district administration had spent Rs. 46.55 lakh under the Cluster development programme. NagapattinamThangam Thennarasu, Minister for School Education, on Sunday, distributed free land to 92 poor farmers and agricultural labourers to the extent of 31.23 acres and free house pattas (6.64 hectares) to 712 beneficaries valued at Rs.20 lakh at a function in Thirupoondi village in Nagapattinam district. Distributing the free land and house site pattas, the sixth phase of distribution of free land and house site pattas under the Government’s scheme, the Minister said that the Government was according priority to help the weaker sections of the society. Mr Thangam Thennarasu highlighted the various achievements of the Government.
