dated January 1, 1958: Nuclear tests

The Political Committee of the Afro-Asian Solidarity Conference meeting in Cairo on December 30 approved its final resolution on nuclear weapons calling upon “the Governments of the United States, Soviet Russia and Britain to put an end to continuing tests of nuclear weapons.” The resolution added: “Such tests are a serious menace to humanity and we demand the immediate unconditional banning of the tests as the first step towards the prohibition of the manufacture and stockpiling and use of these weapons of mass destruction and as a step towards universal disarmament.” The resolution continued: “As the Soviet Government has declared its readiness to stop nuclear weapon tests beginning January 1958 we appeal to the United States and the United Kingdom to take the same attitude."
