‘Police succeed in checking Maoist activities’

Only 18 Maoists from the region are still active, says SP

Several Maoists have been arrested or surrendered


GUNTUR: While there was only one Maoist active in Guntur district, 18 others hailing from the region were active in various places in the underground activities in Andhra Orissa Border, Dandakaranya and Chattisgarh State, the Superintendent of Police Mahesh Chandra Laddha said.

Detailing the achievements of the police during 2007 on containing Maoist activities, he said that while 2006 had been an extremely good year in containing their movements, the work was finished in 2007 with a huge catch of arms and ammunition from dumps and several of their cadre were either arrested or surrendered.

Arms and ammunition recovered during 2007 included rockets (600), launchers (15), AK-47 Rifle (1), 303 Rifles (7), Revolvers (2), Pistols (2), 8mm Rifles (2), Air Rifle (1), Air Pistol (1), SBBL Guns (2), 12 bore Tapanchas (15), Grenades (10), AK-47 Magazines (2), LMG rounds (45), AK-47 Rifle Rounds (47), SLR rounds (85), 303 rounds (376), 410 Musket rounds (54), 12 tapancha rounds (60) and 8mm rounds (300).

Mines and other materials recovered were 20 Kg landmines (7), 15 Kg landmines (8), 10 Kg landmines (10), Claymore mines (5), Anti personnel pressure mines (50), Pressure mine springs and spare parts (104), Explosive materials (150 kgs), Electrical Detonators (2,500), Non-electrical detonators (2,000), Grenade spare parts (380), Tapancha spare parts (95), Camera flashes (10), Binaculars (5), Manpacks (7) and cell phones (7).

Seven Maoists had surrendered during this period and they were identified as: Kommu Manthramma alias Jyothi(platoon member), Jaladi Kishore Babu alias Viswam, (dalam member), Sanyapogu Ravindrababu alias Sudarshan(section commander), Turlapati Tanuja alias Jyothi (platoon member), Kokkera Srinivasarao alias Srinu(action team member), Valluri Narasimha Rao alias Suryam (DCM) and Velaga Lakshmi alias Jaya(dalam member). The police arrested nine Maoists and registered cases against them.

The nine were identified as Inumukkala Babu alias Sekhar, platoon commander, Machavarapu Rani alias Padma, platoon member, Ammisetti Rangarao alias Kiran, DCM, Syed Saida, platoon member, Mareedu Prasada Babu, courier, Allareddy Venkata Reddy alias Raju, platoon member, Mydukuri Raff alias Jaheer, commander, Jathavath Ramsingh Naik, ACM and Singa Prasad alias Ravi, ACS.

Two maoists were killed in exchange of fire. In the exchange that too place between Mannepalli Thanda and Ravulapuram villages of Bollapalli Mandal, on July 27 Kota Ananda Kumar alias Shyam of Ramapuram, action team member and P. Dasaradham alias Tech Srinu of Ellikkal village, DY. C.O Platoon were killed.
