Corrections and clarifications

* The eighth paragraph in a report “Ladakh anti-corruption drive gets cold response” (December 30, 2007) was: “Leh-based 16 Corps has been the source of repeated embarrassments for the Army in recent years, on a welter of issues ranging from corruption to the sexual harassment of women officers.” (There were also references to it in paragraphs 10 and 11.) Praveen Swami clarifies that it was a reporting error and should have been the “Leh-based 14 Corps”. A pointer in the accompanying info-box also had the incorrect reference to “16 Corps”. (16 Corps is based at Nagrota, in Jammu and Kashmir.)

* In a report “BJP wrests Himachal” (December 29, 2007, page 1), the eighth paragraph was: “While three Ministers bit the dust, Mr. Singh survived the saffron sweep, retaining his Rohru seat in Shimla district. He won by a margin of 14,000 votes. The defeated Ministers included Raj Kishan Gaur (Agriculture), Ram Lal Thakur (Forest and Sports) and Kuldeep Kumar (Forests and Industries). Mr. Kuldeep Kumar held only the portfolio of Industries.

* A sentence in the fourth paragraph of a Guardian article “What the PPP must do now” (Op-Ed, December 29, 2007), by writer Tariq Ali, was: “This is a popular space named after the country’s first Prime Minister, Liaquat Ali Khan, who was assassinated in 1953.” It was an error. A few readers point out that he was assassinated on October 16, 1951. (The municipal park, where he was assassinated, was renamed Liaquat Bagh (Park) in his honour. Benazir Bhutto was assassinated just outside the same park on December 27, 2007.)

* In a report “BJP celebrates Himachal victory” (December 29, 2007), the second paragraph was: “BJP president Rajnath Singh congratulated the State people and party workers for giving the BJP a positive ‘swing’ of 10 per cent over the votes polled by the party in the 2002 Assembly elections.” It should have been the “2003 Assembly elections”, as said in the accompanying KBK poll graphic.

* The last paragraph in a report “Chidambaram’s Adviser quits” (December 29, 2007) was: “For his pioneering work in introducing VAT in Brazil, Dr. Shome became the first Indian to be awarded the nation’s highest civilian hour for a non-Brazilian, the ‘Commander of the Order of the Southern Cross.’” “Hour” should have been “honour”.

* It is the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), and not the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Rural Mission as given in a report “4 lakh houses for urban poor coming: [Delhi Chief Minister] Sheila [Dixit]” (Delhi, December 26, 2007, page 4).
