LTTE training camp destroyed

B. Muralidhar Reddy

COLOMBO: The Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) on Monday claimed to have destroyed a “training camp” of the LTTE in Mulaithiuvu even as the military said at least 50 Tiger cadres were killed in battles along the Forward Defence Lines (FDLs) in the north in the last 24 hours.

A statement by the Defence Ministry said, “The fighter jets launched from Katunayake air base have bombed the terrorist camp around 7.15 a.m. The target has been identified as a training base which conducts both recruit and refresher training for the LTTE cadres. Air force says the target has been accurately hit.”

Separately, the military said troops “maintained resistance” at LTTE defences in Jaffna and Wanni forcing the Tiger cadres to “pullback further in to the non liberated areas.” It was claimed that 25 cadres of LTTE and several LTTE bunkers were destroyed in the clashes.

The Defence Ministry accused the LTTE of having triggered a claymore mine targeting security forces convoy of busses on Monday. It said four security forces personnel including three navy sailors and one army soldier have suffered injuries in the explosion. A defence official in Mannar said that the convoy of busses was carrying unarmed security forces personnel going on leave.
