KOCHI: The employees of Cashew Export Promotion Council of India (CEPCI) have urged the Union Minister for Commerce and Industries, Kamal Nath, to merge the Council with the proposed Cashew Development Board / Development Authority. In a memorandum, the employees requested the minister to stall any move for shifting of the CEPCI office from Kochi. The CEPCI was established in Kochi during 1954. It is the only organisation looking after all the liaison works between the exporters and the government of India. Kochi is ideally located to reach from all parts of the world. It is the commercial and industrial capital of the State and the infrastructure facilities available are better than other parts of Kerala. International airport, international conventional centre, Cochin Port Trust, Cochin Customs, MPEDA, Spices Board, Coconut Development Board, Coir Board, Rubber Board and Reserve Bank of India are functioning at Kochi. Besides, another organisation looking after the cultivation of cashew, Directorate of Coconut Development, is also situated in Kochi. The memorandum raised apprehensions over the move to shift the CEPCI and said the employees would oppose it. The Kerala Chamber of Commerce and Industry, in a separate statement, opposed the move and urged the Union Minister of State for Commerce, Jairam Ramesh, to intervene in the matter.
