Kramnik catches up with Anand

NEW DELHI: Russia’s Vladimir Kramnik caught up with World champion Viswanathan Anand at the top of the world ranking in the latest list effective from January 1.

Kramnik, who will challenge Anand for the world crown in October, picked up 14 points after winning the Tal Memorial tournament and matched Anand’s tally of 2799.

Anand, rated at 2801 since October 1, dropped two points from three games of the 23rd European Club Cup.

Sasikiran moves up

K. Sasikiran, who gets married in late January, begins the New Year as world No. 39, up 10 places since October, after picking up 16 points to reach 2677. P. Hari Krishna, however, slipped from the 45th to the 53rd spot after losing four points to be rated at 2664.

G.N. Gopal, whose Grandmaster title was confirmed by FIDE in November but still not recorded in the list for reasons unknown, enjoys his career-best rating of 2528 to be eighth in the country’s top-10 list.
