HYDERABAD: Having achieved a record production this year, the Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) is planning to set up a 500 MW merchant power plant in Jaipur mandal of Adilabad district. To be set up at cost of Rs. 2,400 crore, the power project is likely to be commissioned by 2011. The project will be developed by the SCCL alone, Singareni Chairman and Managing Director S. Narsing Rao told reporters here on Monday. He said the company would use 140 MW for captive use and sell the rest. The installed capacity might be scaled up to 600 MW also, he added. As part of business development and diversification, the SCCL is planning to acquire the SMS explosive plant located at Godavarikhani (Karimnagar) and Manuguru (Khammam) in SCCL coalfield from Indian Oil Corporation for Rs. 6 crore to ensure continuous supply of explosives for mining operations. Mr. Rao hinted at the possibility of increasing coal prices as Coal India Limited (CIL) had already hiked them by 14 per cent. Giving an overview of the company’s performance during the year, Mr. Rao pointed out that the SCCL achieved a record production of 29.83 million tonnes against a target of 28.645 MT. The coal production has witnessed 14.3 p.c. growth rate over the corresponding year. The company also achieved all time record in coal dispatches amounting to 31.069 MT till December. The SCCL posted cumulative provisional profit after tax of Rs. 94.86 crore till December 2007. The chairman said that year 2007 was a strike-free year for the company. To a query, he said 27 new mines would be opened in the 11th five-year plan of which seven would be underground mines and four long wall projects. “The plan is to reach the 50 million tonne production mark,” Mr. Rao said and pointed out that Rs. 3,600 crore would be spent on these mines.
