Visually impaired troupe performs in U.K.

Staff Reporter

They performed

in 28 places

Bangalore: Music knows no barriers… and the visually impaired troupe of musicians and dancers from Samarthanam Trust for the Disabled, through their tour of the U.K. displayed exactly that.

The five-member group of two dancers, Savithri and Nagaveni, two singers G.A. Nagesh and B. Jayaram and a key board player, Amit, along with two normal musicians, Meenakshi and Mahender, and two trustees, Paul Mudda and Vasanthi Savanur, from the organisation travelled around the United Kingdom and the troupe performed in 28 places from November 1 to 25 including at a programme hosted by the Indian High Commission in London.

In honour of the troupe members, the Samarthanam Trust had organised a programme here on Saturday and a musical and dance performance by the group was held. “The message that we sent across to the audience that had come to listen to us performing was that disability is not a barrier for good talent and persons with disabilities can reach great heights with their abilities,” said B. Jayaram, a partially blind member of the troupe, who is working as a chartered accountant in an audit firm.

He said the U.K. tour, which took them to Manchester, Nottingham, Buckingham, Cardiff, Redding and many other places gave them the exposure that they needed and accolades from the audience. “We got to meet artistes from there and a lot of other people who gave a good response to our performances. It is a dream of every artiste to get such exposure and we could not have asked for more,” Jayaram added.
